Artist Statement for Joyce Meck

"I have heard that learning to paint is a three stage process: First, one learns the basics, drawing well, light and shadow, depth, and of course, becoming familiar with materials. Second, learn the techniques, experiment - 'what happens if I do this...' And finally, becoming your own artist - Style. But I think that learning will never end, thankfully. I believe that I have begun my 'style' but who knows? The most enjoyment is in the surprise I get with every painting. I don't make all the decisions before laying color to paper. I like to let some of it just happen. The composition, the use of the negative space (which is as important as the positive space) compatibility of colors, depth, light and shadow, and the focal point are decisions that must be made first, but the rest is just plain fun!"
Joyce usually uses a limited pallet, and with many glazing layers, her colors remain brilliant. She tends to lean towards abstract in the backgrounds of her florals, but her detail is exact.
"It's an obsession, this painting thing, something I wish I had started earlier. We moved from the east coast to Maui in 1998, and being surrounded by some of natures most beautiful layouts, it is easy to understand why Maui is an artist's haven of sorts. We moved back to the mainland in 2007. We are now in New Mexico where there is also so much to inspire. I like to try and capture an instant of nature's time, so my viewer's can see something that they may not otherwise take the time to see. I hope you will enjoy my work.
