Artist Statement for Judy Sauer

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and have lived here all my life. I began quilting in 1980 having been a crafter for years in a variety of mediums. By 1990 I found my calling, art quilts, and I began framing to enhance the art. My drawing abilities caused me to create abstract art mainly but now I find fabrics offer so much more in subject matter. I prefer to cut out rather than cut up any fabric that offers so many possibilities. I use paper, yarn, beads, ribbon and other things at times to enhance the art.
I believe that every piece of fabric has a story to tell and I am the tool from which that story is told. Styles are created by the fabric itself. I am greatly influenced by the Asian style art and fabric. Color is one of the most important considerations when creating art; color can create emotion and I believe when someone looks at my art they see that I enjoy my work.
