My work focuses on tranlating the New Mexico landscape into abstract forms, and with my figurative paintings, finding my own spiritual place in the vastness of the desert.
My painting process is based on pure intuition. The work is bold, edgy and dynamic, integrating form, line and color. It is raw yet not unsophisticated. I paint with no preconceptions. One brush stroke leads to the next, building mass along the way. Surprise plays a key role yet the work has a sense of control and mastery, the active mind watching, then guiding. The combination of random lines with contrasting color and light correspond to a kind of quiet tension cognizant of the existence of natural things in the environment. Working this way I can strip the landscape to its essential core and portray its true beauty unencumbered. The combination of different media allow me to create more of a sense of texture that is so much the essence of experiencing the Northern New Mexico desert.
In my ongoing figurative series, the figures arise organically from the paper and appear through the subtle layers of paint that are applied and partially removed with a soft hand. They gradually appear as though they have just arrived. They are at once both guardians and messengers of the spiritual power of the desert.
