Artist Statement:
Justin Tyler Tate
Whether through interaction that is forced by an aggressive nature, necessitated by proximity or by physical contact, my work extends out into the space between the object and the viewer. The viewer has to adjust his or her posture to fit the needs of the work. This interaction with the object results in an introspective examination of the body and the surrounding space. Interaction between the subject/object stimulates an incentive for thorough and strategic appraisal of the work. I believe this critical engagement is the most crucial and unifying aspect of my work. Between self-examination and spatial recognition a dialogue is created. An analysis of use and functionality is apparent when the viewer is required or denied interaction. This give/take, elevation/diminution of the viewer/object relationship leaves the work in a slippery realm creating a myriad of associations and possible interpretations.
