BIOGRAPHY
Jeff Chun graduated from California State University at Long Beach with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in 1984. For the next four years he freelanced as an illustrator in the Commercial Arts as well as working part-time at various design studios in the West Side and the South Bay. In early 1986 Jeff co-founded a screen printing company called Visual Frenzy. However, he sold his partnership a year and a half later so he could return to his first passion -- painting and drawing.
In 1985 Jeff was commissioned by the White Mountain Apache Tribe to paint two portraits for their Cultural Center in Fort Apache, Arizona. Jeff considers this a turning point for him -- both creatively and career-wise; the former because of the growth he gained in his execution of the pieces and the latter because of his wish to pursue the Fine Arts in addition to the Commercial Arts.
From 1987 to 1991 Jeff worked on a series of paintings and drawings devoted to figure skaters. Enamored by the dance-like beauty of the sport, he found that the athletes resembled performance artists such as ballet rather than just gymnasts on ice.
Currently Jeff’s varied interests coupled with the constant bombardment of stimuli in this modern world has influenced him to paint a multitude of diverse themes. These include a small set based on bonsai plants, a modest group of mini-canvases that deal with social-political satire, plus a series based on a personal psychological study into mysticism. In addition, Jeff has painted pieces that has dealt with enviornmental issues and in the future plans to do a collection based on mythological warriors of different cultures. Currently, besides his commissions and personal projects, he paints portraits of his two children on their birthdays since they were born.
Besides his work in the Commercial and Fine Arts, Jeff is been employed at Mattel, Inc. as an art director in their Graphic Design Group.
