Artist Statement for John Marland

|
I use my art to create images of places, events and people that expose a part of the human experience that people can relate to.
In drawings the minimal amount of line and image to evoke that response is usually the best. You won't see every leaf on every tree, or each fine line in a subject's hair. In other words, it's really not illustrative.
I try to make my pen drawings such that the viewer feels as though they have just happened across the scene, a glimpse of some happening that evokes a feeling of shared experience. They should give the same feeling that you get when in conversation with a friend, you find that you have a common response to some bit of life.
