KAREN JONES
ARTIST STATEMENT
I have been painting for over 25 years. I have experimented with different mediums and found that I most enjoyed working with pastels because of their unique ability to create soft, dreamy images that are very rich in color.
I find the world a noisy, complicated place where refuge and quiet are sought out by those needing a calm place to retreat to. I attempt to create a serene landscape with no intrusions or signs of human habitation - just the land, sky and a point on the horizon where one can be alone.
When I moved to the north shore of Boston where there are many salt marshes and beaches along the coast, I found an area rich in natural beauty where the change of light and seasons provide infinite inspiration.
Only recently I have started to work in acrylics - I love working in this medium as the colors are as saturated as pastels - the blue of the sky, the terracotta and burnt sienna of the ground and turquoise in the dark shadows is a combination that I’m very drawn to for the vibrancy of color and strong emotive light.
