Artist Statement for Karen Mcconnell

Visions and dreams…..they come unbidden and an artist is compelled to express them. The patterns of my life experiences and the colours of my emotions crowd within, making me long to have them resonate again in the heart of at least one other. My work is therefore a series of very personal statements.

When someone looks at my imagery, I want them to hear my voice and I want them to see the many hues of joy and pathos filtered through my vision. In the beginning, my work was almost always representational and figurative. The realism of the early watercolours later gave way to other media and more stylised work depicting creatures and places which seem to belong to a time other than the present. Born in my imagination, they reflect many of my own interests and passions: music, literature, theatre and dance.

As my life changes, so does the work. It cannot be otherwise. In whatever direction the work moves, it is always my hope that it will touch and uplift, and ignite the observer’s own emotions.

This is why I am an artist.
