Artist's Statement:
My paintings are an emotional response to the landscape, simplified to express the serenity of open space and the weight of the atmosphere, but also containing a dark undertone of mystery or loss, attached to our experience of nature.
They range from the contemplative to the dramatic in mood, drawing the viewer
into the scene as a lone observer. I de-emphasize content, preferring that pictorial objects seem to merge with the air and the light, but there is still a sense of place, time and season in the paintings.

| Your Personal Biography |
I always drew and painted as a child, but did not major in art as a college student, because I didn't related to abstract expressionism, which was the all-consuming movement at that time. So I became a designer, first in the theater, then in fashion, jewelry and finally, interiors. While running my interior design business for the last twenty years, I spent my spare time in a self-directed pursuit of an art education.
Starting in pastels and proceeding to oil painting, I have been observing the landscape and painting in both a representational style, and lately, an abstract interpretation. Now I'm starting to understand what was happening back in the fifties and sixties! I'm lucky that my home in the Hudson Valley of New York has beautiful natural surroundings and the strong historical tradition of landscape painting, as well as great places to study. I've worked at the Art Students League, National Academy of Design, Woodstock School of Art, and Bard College, and am now a full-time painter. |
