Artist Statement for Kari Feuer

Artist's Statement:

Growing up in a beautiful part of the world, the Pacific Northwest, has been a grounding for my appreciation of my present surroundings clear across the country, in the Hudson Valley of New York. My response to the beauty of the landscape is an elegy for our loss of untouched innocent countryside, and a fusion of atmosphere and solidity to heighten the serenity I feel in being in nature.

In order to avoid being sentimental or manipulative, I find myself focussing more on the painting process than on a realistic portrayal. I let the paint itself stand in for the subject. It could be the dry brushing of the particles, to indicate the mystery and frailty of the image in the atmosphere. Or slathering, scraping, eroding the lost color buried in layers. The perspective shifts, losing or distorting the horizon, sometimes flying out to aerial views.

Although striving for a distillation of my initial responses to the mystery of a scene, I continue to begin a painting with a representational sketch or photo reference, then let the dram, the light and the season give their direction to the conceptualization of the painting process.
