Artist Statement for Kate Hollett

What I am trying to do with my work is create a visual language. I take large universal concepts, words like love, abstract words, and deconstruct them into simple individual components. I use abstract interpretation to break down meaning into many various interpretations of the same word or concept. Once various canvases and films are completed, the work leads me to discover a deeper understanding of what those words can mean and, a new way of communicating them.

Often when working with universal concepts, abstract words, thoughts, and, breaking them down into individual meanings, I come across words, meaning, where breaking down their meaning is beyond research and individual understanding, so working with video pulling in other people into the process is essential.Visual language has become an area of profound research in the last twenty to thirty years. People like Robert Horn and Edward Tufte have written, visualized, researched what that form of communicating looks like and can be developed into. Robert Horn defines visual language “as the tight integration of words and visual elements and as having characteristics that distinguish it from natural languages as a separate communication tool.”

Robert Horn defines visual language “as the tight integration of words and visual elements and as having characteristics that distinguish it from natural languages as a separate communication tool.”In my work, I integrate both words and visual elements to try to create a separate way of communicating. My work expands the concept of visual language by using big, complex thoughts, words, like love, Peace, faith, time, etc. and uses abstract concepts and expressionist techniques, exploring avenues available to both paint and video to create a much more profound understanding of that word. At the same time, the work promotes ownership of thought, meaning. In this way, what I am trying to do is “see” not “read” what is being done with their usage and what the words can mean.

-30-"In rare moments there is clarity, not the kind the mind makes up
or some kind of reflection of a dream or expectation,
but the kind of clarity that is timeless and still.

Art...Creativity, is my path to this clarity, it is and always will be a guiding light."
