Why I paint....
I paint because art is the one thing that I've found that helps me prevent the pain and frustration of severe and constant migraine headaches.
When I first began painting, my work was dark and dramatic - often negative. As a good friend and artist told me "You've got to paint out your demons before you paint the pretty stuff". So very true. As my pain relented and my quality of life improved, my work began to reflect the positive energy that I had found. Now I receive comments that speak of the tremendous energy people feel as they view my art. "The painter of Energy" - one person remarked, tongue-in-cheek. Those that connect with my art tell me that they believe they can feel what I felt as I painted - years after they placed my art in their homes and offices. I do believe that those that live with Art - whether as the painter, the collector, or simply the viewer - gain untold pleasure and comfort from living with pieces that "speak" to them. Being able to tap into the energy of Art - and the wonderful...

March 2006
DEZART ONE GALLERY HAS MUST SEE EXHIBITS OF VISUAL VERBALIZATIONS
2688 Cherokee Way-Palm Springs – 760-328-1440
“Dialogues in Abstraction” Dezart One Gallery presents the work of three abstract painters communicating in a language of their own. The visual verbalizations may depend on the viewer’s ability to assimilate shape, color, and movement by giving voice to it. This show investigates visually, the balance and counterbalances that result from dialogues in abstraction. Kathryn Abernathy: “I love the array of emotions that just a few pigments can bring to a painting. The colors, textures, and techniques that I use in my paintings most often come about as my curiosity runs loose. I would like the viewer to have the same sense of wonder as they contemplate my finished works.”Gegam Kacherian: “The reason I paint is to understand the incidental nature of all things, and the meaning that ties them all together. A painting is born with the first brush stroke. As it is being created, it takes on a life of its own. It is like the dance of the universe, and each painting is a metaphor for humanity.”
Donna Reibslager: “My work has evolved toward abstraction, as I become more focused on the use of color and on achieving a strong and balanced composition. Without over thinking the process, it allows me to be more open to new directions as they present themselves. It is my objective to paint intuitively; to be guided by the process.”
The Artists Reception, which was held at the Dezart Gallery Saturday, March 11th, was well attended in celebration of the talent of these fine artists. “Dialogues in Abstraction” will be featured at the Gallery, located at 2688 Cherokee Way, Palm Springs, through April 23, 2006. For more information please call (760) 328-1440.
Expect something different at the next “Poetry Happening”, an open reading at Dezart Studio. A great deal of excitement has been generated due to the success of this spoken word series. Writers are encouraged to share ideas, poetry, and stories with the audience.
There will be wine and snacks to help make this a true celebration of sharing through words. This free event takes place on the third Saturday of every month. The next “Poetry Happening” takes place on March 18th at 5 P.M. You will always find something interesting at Dezart Studio; 4116 Matthew Drive, Palm Springs. Kathryn Abernathy
Seeking relief, artist finds comfort in her paintings
By Lorna Brown-Ray
Special to Germantown Appeal
January 12, 2006
For Kathryn Abernathy, art began as a way to heal herself and has now become a journey guided by intuition and synchronicities.
"After several years of the debilitating pain and frustration of constant migraines, I decided to focus on regaining my health," Abernathy said.
"All my energies were consumed by migraines or 'busy-ness' -- home, carpools, after-school activities, church and school events. I made a conscious effort to do less and accept that being perfect at everything was not healthy for me. I also made a conscious effort to find something that would help me find and maintain my center," she said.
Through friends, Abernathy observed the pleasure and therapy that art can offer.
"I saw that art could provide me with time for myself. I didn't know it then, but there's a spiritual dimension to art that's more important than what actually comes out on canvas. The true purpose of art for me is taking care of myself and better understanding myself," she said.
Abernathy chose a watercolor class as her introduction to art. Later she decided to take a class in acrylics at the Memphis College of Art. She struggled with her first project, which was painting a little tree.
Unhappy with her attempt she added another layer of paint. As she continued to paint layers of color she discovered her own style of painting, which involves building layers of transparent color and adding texture.
She puts up to 30 layers of paint on a piece. To Abernathy, the layers of color are life representative.
"We all have multiple layers from every age and experience of our lives. It's the accumulation and complexity of the layers that give us richness," she said.
With migraines mostly a part of the past, art has become a major focus for Abernathy. In the last year she has sold more than 40 pieces from New York to Seattle. She has also been involved in three solo and eight group exhibits. She will soon be featured on HGTV's "Designer Challenge" show.
As successful as she has become, Abernathy has not lost sight of why she started painting and how integral it is to her well-being. "I just check out when I'm painting. If I have a migraine that's beginning, I can start painting and the pain goes away. I can feel the shift from my logical left brain to my more artistic right brain. It's refreshing ... it's freeing. I get excited for the next day because there's so much to look forward to," she said.
On Friday, Abernathy will have a solo show at the West Clinic's Wings Gallery from 5 to 6:30 p.m. She will donate a piece to their permanent collection in honor of a friend's five-year survival of ovarian cancer.
