Artist Statement for Kay Frances

KAY FRANCES
In my own words....

Living in Cairo, Egypt through the 90's, I suddenly started painting, partly inspired by the ‘place’ I was living and teachers who also encouraged me in my artistic way. Then moving to live in Eastern Europe, and exhibiting in Barcelona, my work has been unfolding without following any particular artistic style or movement. Living alone in a small Bulgarian village, outside the capital Sofia, (where my 70+ years old neighbours were outside doing the 'real' work in their gardens), I discovered that isolation was perhaps the most profound 'self teaching' of my artistic life.

When working on a painting I am often surprised by what comes, then sometimes reworking, descending even deeper, and am surprised yet again..! Another painting follows, and the process begins again. I am intuitive about colour and the light just comes, or I am intuitive about light and the colour just follows. I delight in when people have their own experience of my work, awakening their own creative impulses, and somehow we all transcend cultural boundaries within this "secret understanding" of humanness. I feel very connected to scenes and people in faraway places - the pureness of the moment is captured and drawn - art for no sake - soul art.

I returned to live in Australia in 2005, and held my first solo exhibition in Sydney in 2007. In my studio in northern NSW, I also work on "art projects" using what is around me – palm leaves, and other organic matter become ‘mysterious creatures’ who appear and disappear with time, weather etc….

"Art frees our souls to flow into our purpose for being here."
