Artist Statement for Lira Kay

Lira Kay’s paintings are rooted in deep reflectiveness, and it is of significance that her educational background includes the study of Psychology. She also uses meditative techniques to evoke the deep energies which underpin her work, particularly her graphics.

The viewer will be struck by the boldness and freedom of her canvases. Influenced by Kandinski, her paintings show a vibrant appreciation of the power of colour to communicate energy.

Her work is largely abstract or semi-abstract, and often centres on archetypal images, sometimes with a Shamanic influence, sometimes acting like mandalas or Russian icons, providing a meditative focus for the viewer.

As well as abstract paintings there are representational works inspired by travelling in Russia, France, Italy and Scotland.
Her abstract paintings are like snapshots of life, reflections on key experiences and feelings everyone goes through. They start you thinking and feeling. They bring in the most intimate feelings to do with the spiritual, moral and physical aspects of our lives.
