Artist Statement:
Some of the most beautiful
shapes and colors can only be
found in nature, in a flower.
Colors such as the vibrant
magenta of an orchid make for
a beautiful scene to look at,
photograph, and be painted and
appreciated. My paintings of
flowers could be described as
“painterly photo
realistic”. The photograph
becomes part of the art
because I enjoy the photo just
as much as the finished
painting.
I believe some of the most
amazing pieces of art are
those that have realistic
qualities. By painting from a
photograph, it allows me to
portray the flowers not only
in a realistic manner, but it
also allows me to paint the
magical things that happen in
a photograph. By paying close
attention to the special depth
between the foreground and
background, it creates a
painting that feels like a
photograph, but looks like a
painting. I try to give
attention to shifts in color,
texture, depth, etc. All of
these elements together
create, hopefully, a beautiful
and mysterious photographic
painting.
