Artist Statement:
Ken Waters
Artist’s Statement


As a boy I was fascinated by
people and architecture. I
believe that I have always
been drawn to the human form
but did not discover my
passion for architecture until
early adulthood. Although I
have been drawing since I can
remember, it wasn’t until I
entered in college art classes
that I started to take a
closer look at what I was
putting down on paper. I began
drawing from photographs with
a number two pencil. I would
press down harder on the
drawing or lighten up my grip
in order to get contrast out
of my work.

My high school Art teacher
also suggested that I stop
drawing from photographs
(which limits one’s
scope/lens) and start using my
own imagination. He challenged
me to draw with and without
props and models and to
experiment more with the
unknown and the abnormal in
subject matter. Until that
point, I was more interested
in the romance of Western art
and artists such as Frederic
Remington, George Catlin,
Charles M. Russell, Emanuel
Leutze, and Winslow Homer.
Initially, they were my
inspiration.
