Artist Statement for Kerry La Mountain

I am drawn to events and images that are powerful. The human spirit that is challenged oftentimes becomes fragile and small. I want to convey the emotion of the situation through the figures in relation to their surroundings.

Cosmos Series

My work explores my love of abstraction, and finds inspiration in the incredible power and beauty of the universe, its colors, light, and mystery. My inspiration came from brightly colored photographs of galaxies, star nebula, and comets, as well as the theoretical shape of the universe and time. This series, entitled, Cosmos, explores translucent painting surfaces, such as glassine paper, acetate paper and plexiglass, as well as various methods of paint application in order to achieve various effects. The transparency is important in that the viewer can look deeper into the work, the light can shine through it and allow for viewing from both sides. I am working with formal concerns, such as composition and figure/ground relationships. I want the composition to bring about the feeling of chaos within a
mysterious order.

Darfur, Sudan Series

The conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan in 2004 was a horror. Many people had to flee from certain death from militia groups. These people are still in refugee camps, unable to return to their farming livelihood. They still face a dire future, due to continued fighting, abuse, lack of basic necessities and insufficient international aid. The most vulnerable, women and children bore the brunt of the fallout; malnutrition, violence and murder.

Katrina Series

Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on Aug 29, 2005. Many residents were stranded by the storm and its subsequent flooding. I was astounded by this event and moved by the emotional toll it placed upon these people. Tragedy, despair, and abandonment are all portrayed in these images. I used a limited palette with washes of water-soluble paint to the point of watercolor on canvas to evoke the essence of the story told in landscapes with figures.
