Artist Statement for Kristen Hayes
|

|
Spirit is the basis of life, which is the meaning of my work.
Through a beautiful line, color and pure energy, I am interested in expressing human spirit, that which relates to an elevation of the mind, body and soul towards the Creative Force. To show love for one’s self, as well as for others. To invoke positivity, emotion, thoughtfulness, truth. And to ultimately convey my experiences with the Creative Force, in hopes of sharing how He/She lives through me.
With the process of painting and drawing, I want the viewer to not only to see the composition, but to feel my hand in the work. With this energy various organic shapes, particularly the Black female figure, are inspirations upon which I draw, because they represent the origins and continuation of life; i.e. the Circles seen in a Black woman's hips abdomen, breasts, thighs, which all represent ideas of life, maternity, birth and progression.
A native of Washington, DC, Kristen Hayes received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Hampton University, where she had the pleasure of studying under the artist-in-resident James Phillips, a member of the artist group ‘Africobra.’ His use of the group’s ‘Kool-aid’ colors directly influenced her to incorporate a more spirited and colorful palette in her own work.
In 2000, she obtained a Masters of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Exploring her natural tendency to use abstracted contour lines with an energetic palette became her focus, as she drew upon organic shapes and forms that represented energy, life and the idea of reproduction.
Currently, she resides in Washington, D.C. and continues to freelance and teach art while pursuing her work on a full-time basis.
