"Tales From A Nearby Village"
In the night: the familiar cold, blue light of images flickering through a darkened room. Here and there a moment both contemporary and ancient, traces of one within the other, fossilized remains.
The Caliph said to Scherazade, "Change the channel."
*
And the next evening the child was again frightened and unable to sleep and so he came to the woman for a story that he might be comforted. As she held the child she said:
"What tale shall I tell you? Who shall I be tonight? The Weaver? Or the Warrior? The Child, the Warbride or the Bearer of Children? The Spouse or the Woman Bereft? Perhaps the Shaman."
And she began:
"On a festival day in a near-by village, the people gather to watch the performance of a traveling opera company. With dance and song and costume the Tale of their ancestors moves before them."
