Artist Statement:
Originating from Latvia, I moved to the UK in 2006, living and working in Stoke-on-Trent.
I was drawn to the art of clay from a very early age.
At first it was childrens studios, later I attended various public courses combined with self education and experimentation mainly through literature, bolstered by a natural curiosity to learn.
My sculptures are about feelings, emotions and dreams.
Before making each piece, I have an almost complete sketch in my mind and on paper. but during the creation process, each piece starts to generate its own rules and the interaction that follows can often result in something completely different from the initial idea.
I try to infuse individual and personal characteristics in each piece I create, even down to the smallest animal sculpture.
All my ceramics are hand crafted, I use different types of clay, very often combined with metal or glass, as the primary idea dictates the material and technology I use in each project.
My rules are based on something I heard from a very old Latvian potter – "it doesn’t matter if your pot is perfectly straight, the essence of all art is how much of your heart you ...
