Artist Statement for Kim Piercy
|

|
I always knew I wanted to be an artist. As a child I couldn’t wait to paint a refrigerator masterpiece with my fingers or sculpt a castle in the back yard’s mud after a good rain. I survived most of my classes by drawing diagrams and replicas of models to learn subjects such as science, geography, and history. Inspired by music I filled notebooks full of redrawn album covers. My emotions came out in drawings and sketchbooks turned into a visual version of therapy. As a mother I recall past craft experiences and simplify them into projects for my sons. I observe things and am constantly thinking of how to recreate it or how it was produced in the first place.
With the incredible support of my family I was able to immerse myself into school, attending College of Charleston and subsequently earning a BA from Kennesaw State University. Under the instruction of practicing artists in these institutions, I was able to expand on the passion I already possessed. Over the years I have learned many new techniques and enriched my mind with the ideas of others. These tools have enabled me to create works that have been included in several juried art shows in South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and New York. I am expanding on this knowledge and striving to find my own style.
The world around me is my inspiration and my artwork reflects what I know on a personal level. I have recently realized that my best subjects have been surrounding me right along. I am now focusing on my family for ideas and images. The older I get the more I appreciate the bonds created within a family and individual traits each person possesses that make them unique. I hope to continue to explore the people I cherish most and express my love for them through my artwork.
