Artist Statement:
My respect and reverence for
the wildlife of this planet
has led me to paint it almost
exclusively. I have found many
beautiful and interesting
subjects from all over the
world, and often there are
fascinating human histories
linked to them. A woven
tapestry rich in myth and
story telling as well as
simple, honest depiction.
Animals have been revered for
their beauty, their speed and
grace, their ferocity and
their strength. They have also
been noticed for their oddness
and their unusual and
sometimes bizarre appearances
and behaviors.

The way animals have been
depicted by the ancient
cultures of the world shows us
how people related to the
wildlife around them.
Hunter-gatherer societies paid
homage to the animal spirits
that had given their lives so
that the hunters could
survive. Ancient Assyrians
depicted lions carved in
smooth stone relief, monstrous
in their ferocity, mauling and
attacking the heroes shown
hunting them- the more
frightening the lions, the
more heroic the attempt to
hunt them. The ancient
Egyptians portrayed lions as
calm and noble guardians,
strong enough to watch over
the eternal rest of their
pharos. Indeed, the lion was
believed to represent Sekhmet,
the goddess of war. Perhaps
