Artist Statement for Kindrie Grove

My respect and reverence for the wildlife of this planet has led me to paint it almost exclusively. I have found many beautiful and interesting subjects from all over the world, and often there are fascinating human histories linked to them. A woven tapestry rich in myth and story telling as well as simple, honest depiction. Animals have been revered for their beauty, their speed and grace, their ferocity and their strength. They have also been noticed for their oddness and their unusual and sometimes bizarre appearances and behaviors.

The way animals have been depicted by the ancient cultures of the world shows us how people related to the wildlife around them. Hunter-gatherer societies paid homage to the animal spirits that had given their lives so that the hunters could survive. Ancient Assyrians depicted lions carved in smooth stone relief, monstrous in their ferocity, mauling and attacking the heroes shown hunting them- the more frightening the lions, the more heroic the attempt to hunt them. The ancient Egyptians portrayed lions as calm and noble guardians, strong enough to watch over the eternal rest of their pharos. Indeed, the lion was believed to represent Sekhmet, the goddess of war. Perhaps they had witnessed the coordination of a pride of lions working together to hunt down food for their cubs, and attributing those traits to their goddess, believed they had seen her earthly form. Ancient Mayan culture of Central America believed that the jaguar was a supernatural being, and it isn’t hard to understand that view in light of the elusiveness of these spotted ghosts. Wildlife was incorporated into both the spiritual and daily lives of cultures all over the world. They were revered and respected for many different reasons. People’s reliance on and interaction with the animals around them cemented a bond that can still be seen across the span of time.

The inspiration for each painting is always the animal itself. Whether the background of the painting describes Stone Age cave paintings, frozen stone relief or the cracked and aged texture of a perceived future, there is still a thread that weaves them all together: the wildlife. The subjects are large and hard to dismiss and they are all painted with the same attention to detail and form. The sheer size of some of the canvases creates a sense of indomitable presence, as if to liberate the animals from their painted surfaces to walk among us.
