Artist Statement for Leena Knuuttila

My work reflects my life; the still country-life against many travels, the mixture of different cultures and backgrounds,
Rome, - - time passing...Also it reflects the mystery of being a woman and the mother/child relationship, the enigma inside us.
The research of the mythological female characters/women/ has fascinated me with it's actuality together with the golden spell of mythology and mystery.
It somehow seems to belong together with a study of smaller animals, like birds, sheep, doves seen somehow like souls, innocence, destony.
This is what I have been up to untill now...
I love the rough surfaces that slightly suggest of something odd difficult to describe and to understand immediatedly. It often gves an archeological touch to my work, and this research has brought me closer to sculpture and small indoor installations.
My sculpture is done in different medias, marble, stone, bronze, ceramic and even cement that specially fascinates me. With paintings and smaller pieces of sculptureI try to build togetherworking combinations like kind of installations.
So my art becomes a mixture, a constant back and forth with ideas, identities, cultural effects laid on top to one another;
something of Italy (where I live permanently) combined with my native Finland, my travels in South America and specially the travels to deeply fascinating places one easily fails to understand, like Istambul, northern Africa and South-America(the "mirage"-serie).
