Artist Statement for Leena Knuuttila

My work reflects my life; the still country-life in Italy against many travels, the mixture of different cultures and backgrounds,
Rome, - - time passing...Also it reflects the mystery of being a woman and the mother/child relationship, the enigma inside us.

I love the rough unfinished surfaces, both in painting and in sculpture. They often give an archeological touch to my work, and I find this "atmosphere" very important.
My sculpture is done in different medias, marble, stone, bronze, ceramic and even cement.
What gives me the biggest satisfaction right now is the rakuceramic.
