Artist Statement for Jarmila Kostliva
Finding provocative inspiration in Carl Gustav Jung's meditations on symbols of the collective human psyche, Jarmila Kostliva's paintings explore realms of emerging subjectivity in varying states of visual conception. She brings
gracefully formulated sense of drama to her compositions, extending upon the subterranean mysteries of her archetypal reflections in cyclical concentrations.
"I am always grateful for the experiences and fragile moments of the intuition or impulse, which I consider my ammunition or my mental sketching pad. My work comes in a flux of an inspiration and in cycles. It leaves when the subject is exhausted and takes on the definitive form and establishes it's own reality on the canvas.
For several years I have been preoccupied with the imagery on themes of primordial life, biomorphic forms, roots, rebirth, ocean, Earth, and the eternal biological life of amoebas, literally being our ancestors,..versus our contemporary life today. By subconsciously applying the mythological symbols I have come to realize that my work very often speaks in terms of collective subconscious, that work of art is a mixture of very personal subjective and objective impressions, views and feelings. This process of creativity brings me the feelings of wonder and surprise. The quality of the unexpected gives me the motivation to continue my work.
In the past I have performed in the theatre and film as a profesional Ballet Dancer. I danced on stage and have been touring Europe, North and South America . The experience of the discipline , stage, music, fantasy and ability to transform the body and mind to different levels of the awarness , was important part of my life. My art school as well as my life has formed the way I express and define myself in my work. Often I expect the unexpected, when my work changes in style and the concept. I continue to discover the art the essence of the life and living.
