Artist Statement:
Once upon a time, before I could read I informed my parents I was an artist. I don't know where the word came from but I knew what I meant. They laughed and the war was on. I cartooned my way through high school, put myself through undergraduate school doing portraits, fashion illustrations, architectural renderings... now and then a mural. If it required drawing, it was honest work, and I took it.
Through no small effort, I work more and more like that child... isolating a single state of feeling, whatever that is, here and now. I begin an internal narrative, drawing the story for some particular... invisible... listener who watches and reads every mark.
Without fail, a visitor arrives and the internal monologue becomes a flesh and blood dialogue... more often than not providing the seed for the next work.
I think there is a geometry of emotion, a politics of color, that we are only ever so barely conscious of. I'm concerned with the weight of colors, the velocity of shapes, the infinite combinations and valid responses possible. I work at finding a clear point of emotional departure then let the associations materialize, suspending judgment, shuffling...
