Residuum, in alchemy remnants after a process of sublimation, another name: caput mortuum (acc. to Kopalinski 1. dead head, 2. residuum, i.e. muddy residue, remains, mineral colour ferric oxide received from ferric sulphate used in ancient painting).
Alchemy the view of the world focused on the search for the primary form of matter through chemical processes in which disintegration lead to the purification of live substance, depriving this substance of its specific features, thus reducing them to the primary matter (materia prima E? the original matter).
Process, technology, search and experiment in my artistic work have overlapped with my interests in philosophy and alchemy. Certain processes which occur in the course of painting, like the sifting of marble dust, grinding, the mixing of paints, and the boiling of wax, have proved to be reminiscent of alchemic processes (which is the case of, for instance, my work "Residuum" which deals with the remains of such a process). The large number of activities accompanying my working lead me to the point when I have started to record consecutive stages of my work by means of a camera. I tread this photographic documentation as an autonomous trace of my creative effort; a case similar to my "Urns".
My idea is to enlarge the field of painterly vision, to turn one's attention to a certain blurred trace and to make the presence of a painting process even. Residuum has a universal meaning for me. By virtue of analogy to the final stage of an alchemic process, it touches the metaphysics and duality of existence. The process of sublimation leaves a material trace and a spiritual aura. The opposition between matter and spirituality is a key issue of the entire project, orchestrated for many parts. Kopalinski says "Matter - one of basic philosophical categories; a basic substance set in contrast to form; the entirety of real objects; the opposition of spirit". The inspiration for my project "Residuum" was the painting of the same title made in 1998. The material used to paint this picture were the remains of my former paintings (remains of paints). These former paintings were: "materia prima" from the "Mythology of Red" series and from the series of "Dialogues with Him Who is Absent" (also translated as "The Dialogue with the Unknown").
According to my notes of 10 June 1998 there were the following components: two kinds of black 2 and 1/2 tins, 1 tin of grey E? a leftover after my white works, 1 tin of light ochre, 1 tin of light pink left after the red-and-white painting, 1 tin of white, remains of wax: green, white, tan, and blue, ground granite (blauschwarz), oil, Venetian turpentine, beeswax, and titanium white to lighten things up. After I had melted all of these ingredients I received grey the tinge of which was similar to ashes (Calcinatio), having added some powdered granite I received a cooler hue of grey. I label the colour received this way "residuum".

Gliszczynski's pictures are monochromatic. He shows the process of creation and the materials with which his pictures are created. He uses wax paints and creates reliefs which he covers with more paint. He uncovers portions of painted surfaces by scratching thick layers of paint. The layers are usually monochromatic. Colour contrasts are rare. He cuts the layers of paint with sharp lines. When cut that way, the drawings create an almost abstract conglomerate of design which resembles the Surrealist automatic sketching technique. Gliszczynski's
technique is time-consuming. He produces a lot of waste materials which he colects in plastic containers and exibits together with his pictures.
