Artist Statement:
The most beautiful part is that it invents itself. Simultaneoulsy, it re-invents us. The most intriguing part is that it is re-occuring: continuously becoming - therefore necessarily evolving and revealing. It is shameless because it reveals itself through us without permission, without the necessity of qualification and without the ...

For the 800 lawyers converging in London, Ont., for the Canadian Bar Association conference, art is probably the last thing on their minds. They should know, however, that they are ...

Raised within the juxtaposition of two worlds, both Indian and North
American, East and West, Ko Bhamra's art is informed by a concrete
sense of contradiction and synthesis. She liberates oppressive aspects
of both her Indian and North American heritage with the empowerment of
her strong sense of individuality which, in turn, is fortified by
resources she draws from both cultures. In doing so, she is able to
negotiate the bankruptcy of the modern western spirit by drawing on the
spiritual awareness of her eastern heritage, while at the same time
embracing western notions of political freedom in order to undermine
the social injustices in the east. Ultimately criticizing both worlds
for their dependency on the oppression of women, Ko seeks to liberate
the minds of both women and men through an aesthetic experience that
concretizes her vision of transcending the categorizations which
oppress us and inhibit our connectivity-including race, gender, class
and sexuality. Ko's work indicates the possibility of alternative
visions for our lives (especially for women) in her ability to
restructure our understanding of space through color. In Rebecca
Kendall's words (of ROOM Magazine), she is "restructuring perception
through creative expression." Her work embodies the movement of both
desire and liberation as its feminine figures lead us out to the edges
of the canvas and into a future beyond the constraints of this moment.
Living in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, bordering the city of Detroit,
Michigan, USA, Ko has been exhibiting her work for over a decade. Her
paintings defy static representation-marked with an expression of dance
in what she describes as "bursts which fuse into pulses that emanate
and illuminate the impulses and intuitions that guide us." Drawing on
the rich musical life and history of Detroit, Ko's work echoes in
paint, the innovative sounds of the artists who revolutionized music in
house and techno. Her many commissions include a record label for
Anthony Shakir of Seventh City Records, Detroit, MI.
In addition to her work as an artist, Ko has completed an
undergraduate degree in Philosophy (B.A. Hons.), as well as a Law degree (LL.B.), and
a Masters in Philosophy in which she has pursued
numerous philosophical projects including work in the areas of
Existentialism and the Philosophy of Art.
