Artist Statement:
Val Marten holds degrees from both the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and Salisbury University. Her creative work has been enhanced by exposure to different cultural systems through an abiding interest in anthropology, and international travel and study. She is not a specialist in one material or technique. Val's portfolio includes: painting (all media), sculpture and photography, as well as serigraphy and works on paper. Her subjects range from portrait and figure studies, to landscapes and still lifes. Many of her sculpural wall reliefs (or masks) are strongly inspired by early Celtic myth cycles and medieval folklore. Val is a member of the Art Institute and Gallery of Salisbury Maryland, the Art League of the Eastern Shore, the Eastern Shore Artisan's Guild, and the Societe Internationale Reynardienne. Her masks can also be viewed at http://www.masks.org, an international digital database which serves important maskmakers and scholars interested in researching this unique artform. ...
