Faces have always held a fascination for me. I have always found it easy and natural to observe and evaluate what is in front of me. Expressions convey much more information for me than words ever could. The human face always gives away its secrets. You just have to look closely.
I particularly enjoy painting images of people who may not be 'beautiful' in the conventional sense, but whose faces tell a story, and whose character shines through. (The people who I would 'really' like to meet).
The way that light reflects and casts its shadows can be captured in paint to give an illusion of realism, while I sometimes use different background techniques to deceive the eyes into perceiving movement of a sort.
As my painting techniques improve, I find that I am experimenting now with layering and washes to suggest alternate textures and dimensions. I have only been painting for three years or so, but I am hooked. Every blank canvas is teeming with possibilities.
