Artist Statement for Laurent Sauerwein

I like to explore the spaces that exist between the media and build short sequences of digital images, bouncing them between immaterial networks and material surfaces - book pages, posters, newspapers, gallery walls, computer monitors... I'm particularly fond of those small, lightweight, low-tech, interactive devices we call books: REAL BOOKS WITH PAGES YOU CAN ACTUALLY TURN ! Over 70 bookworks can be ordered online (www.youcantouch.com) and in brick and mortar bookstores in Paris, Berlin, New York.

Main exhibitions: Gallery Sonnabend, Cartier Foundation, Paris Musée d'Art Moderne. Work included in several international collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Cabinet des Estampes in Geneva.

In September 2003, I showed four new books and an installation in "Le Monde" art-critic Geneviève Breerette's loft in Ivry-sur-Seine, just outside Paris. In October of 2004, I will be showing a new series of photographic pop-ups in Shanghai, China.

A former senior-reporter on French public television and a pioneer in interactive multimedia, I currently teach information technology and international communications at the American University of Paris. At Parsons School of Design-Paris, I am head of the Communication Design department.
