Artist Statement for Laura Mae Dooris

I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Art from the Columbus College of Art and Design in December 1999. I have dedicated my life to improving my artistic abilities and a series of mixed media works that satisfies a desire to portray personal experiences and thoughts while incorporating the traditional artistry of generations of women. My work is composed of paint, fabric, unusual artifacts, family photos, silkscreen and collage. Relationships are constructed with each medium to compose a balance of colors and layers utilizing processes of improvisation and reconsideration.

The important aspect in the creation of my images is found in the activity itself demanding both mental and physical experimentation. My artwork is my therapy and an opportunity to explore who I am as a young woman. I utilize the painting experience to learn more about my family, individualism, sexuality, insecurity, fear, confusion, and the unknown.

I have a need to make things, gather relics, collage materials, write down ideas, and wonder about everything around me. There is a certain amount of security, pride, and excitement felt when you create new works; that all my thoughts and questions can be brought to life. Being an artist is something that I have never doubted or questioned; it is what I love and what consumes me.
