For me, it is impossible to separate the materials I choose from the composition itself. Translating a two dimensional object into a three dimensional archive of shape and form, I take my cue from ancient cave paintings and paleontology where surface and depth merge with nature's own aesthetic. Acknowledging the paradox of durability and ceaseless change embodied in nature itself, I hope to create a visual landscape where color and texture respond almost organically to shape and form. Using contemporary materials to invoke the past, time itself emerges as a formal and conceptual preoccupation of the work.
After many years of experimentation with materials, I have formulated an aggregate compound that is both durable and lightweight. Although an extremely labor-intensive process, I now work exclusively with these compounds on various types of panels, constructing wall reliefs or wall sculptures. The surface of each work produces a position dependent shifting field of shadow, light and perspective within the balanced structure. In my translations of natural processes, I hope to communicate an uncluttered and meditative space in which to refuse the easy distinction between past and present, art and artifact.
