Artist Statement for Liana Turnbull Bennett

To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong. Joseph Chilton Pearce
I believe that there are no rules in Art. Creativity is about imagining something, then figuring out how to create that something. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. But in the end, you are constantly learning.
My name is Liana Turnbull Bennett. I have not always been an artist. While other artists were earning degrees in art, I was testing and analyzing the latest high tech materials. This led to a degree in Mechanical Engineering, were my career was spent creating real life applications from these materials. Only later in life could I afford to indulge my real passion, art.
But, without an art degree, would anyone take me seriously? Maybe not. But at least I will get their attention. I believe that my background gives me a creative edge. Unencumbered by traditional art training, I have the freedom to combine my art with my high tech design knowledge. I know materials, how they behave and react, and understand their chemistry and properties. I am not afraid to try new ideas, to step outside the boundaries of traditional art.
I believe a painting can be more than just paint on canvas. As a Mechanical Designer, I am trained to see ideas as 3-Dimensional images. As a result, I am always trying to find a better way to translate that image to a 2 dimensional canvas. This unconventional thinking leads to innovative art.
What is Innovative Art?
· It's paintings created from 2 layers of canvas that are molded into 3-Dimensional, contemporary artwork.
· It's paintings that are taken to 90% completion and then cut and layered into 3-Dimensional original artwork.
· It's abstract landscapes and gemstone paintings created from recycled plastics that are glued in layers onto canvas and then painted.
· It's mixed media art sculptures created from real animal skulls and clay, and then brought to life with paint.
What is Innovative Art? It's original artwork unlike anything you've ever seen before.
