Artist Statement:
Porcelain is silky, barely
buttery, irresistibly
irresistible and is therefore
my clay of choice. Although
right now I’m concentrating on
functional pots I only do
small sets. It is not my
intention to be a production
potter. The sculptural forms
of the raw piece as well as
the design are what I find
engaging. The details draw me
down to their level. This has
compelled me to use
increasingly smaller brushes
so that now they are
comparable to an ultra-fine
pen nib.

I make one-of-a-kind pieces
using stains under a clear
glaze often involving multiple
firings. Previously, I
purposely used a monochromatic
color palette (either cobalt
and white or black and white)
in order to refine the
brushwork. Many hours have
been spent in the last couple
of years experimenting with
additional colors so that I’m
on the brink of bringing a
full color palette to my work.


I like to pose questions on
the rim of a bowl or plate.
Word play, puns, bits of
literature and snatches of
song provoke and entertain.
Some of the sayings that I use
most often are appropriately,
for ice cream bowls:
