Artist Statement:
I first started drawing
animals when I was working in
the movie studios as an
illustrator. They were making
“Dr. Doolittle”, and I went on
the set at lunchtime, where
they had the mothers and
babies of many animals. From
there, I gravitated to the
L.A. Zoo, during my lunch
breaks from my work as an
illustrator at the
Planetarium. Now that I am
retired, I go once a week to
the Sacramento Zoo, to renew
my love affair with painting
animals.
No matter how many times you
paint a subject, there are
hidden nuances to discover. An
intimate knowledge of animals
is enriching and nurturing.
I first experienced the joy of
‘Plein Air’ painting at a
summer art colony in Sumerset,
Pa. in 1936. I have never
gotten over the sensation of
absorbing the sights and
sounds, and the smells of
nature; becoming a vessel for
interpreting that in a
painting. It is the process
itself that has become a part
of my life, like eating,
sleeping, or breathing.
In the 1960’s I became equally
fascinated with etching as a ‘
distilling process’ of
painting and drawing. After I
