Artist Statement for Lee Tiller

Lee Tiller lives amidst the mountains of the Macgillicuddy Reeks on the Iveragh peninsula, County Kerry, Ireland. His studio, "the yellow house" adjacent to his home, is an old converted byre that overlooks a deep glacial valley.

"I draw immense inspiration from this place. Its feral untamed beauty provides endless contrasts to our otherwise orderly state of human existence. The natural majesty of the mountains and the dramatic landscape often leave an unsettled air of intimidation, but can conversely serenade you with a calming gentleness too. It is a magical place indeed."

Tiller's paintings are collected worldwide and can be found in private collections in both hemispheres. Painting in oils, alkyds and acrylics, his artistic works cover a diverse range of natural history subjects from marine wildlife through to 'fugitive abstractions' and wild chromatic landscapes.

Tiller feels a strong connection with the 19th century impressionist movement, believing that impressionism was and continues to be the pinnacle of all art movements. Ironically, given his photographic creative talent, he believes that the advent of the camera led to a gradual disintegration of art resulting in artists painting in a two-dimensional context, rather than exploring light and its dynamic visual effects as the earlier artists did.

"As an artist I endeavour to observe and connect with nature in an emotionally responsive way whereby the canvas becomes an extension of my creative spirituality. Colour I find irresistible, and constantly marvel at nature's myriad hues, resonances and subtleties that as artists we attempt to harness and find order amongst. By definition, colour is its own reward."
