Artist Statement for Lelija Roy

“My art is essentially energy translated into paint. This work combines emotional response with intellectual contemplation of the natural world. The degree of realism or abstraction doesn’t matter. Capturing the energy of the light, color, movement and form—that’s all there is!”
My current focus is the western landscape—real, remembered or imagined. The source of inspiration dictates the media used as well as the degree of realism or abstraction. This work explores an experimental mix of watermedia (watercolor, gouache, inks, acrylics and water-based pigments in crayon and stick forms). Several of these pieces begin with a textural ground in acrylic gel medium or sculptured acrylic pastes.
Each media portrays a unique personality. Bold opaque gouache contrasts with the subtle transparency of watercolor. Inks flow across the paper only to crash into waxy crayons. The delicate pencil lines dance with flashy copper metallic strokes. The work combines an expressive impressionist painting style with glazing and various resist techniques defining space with layers of textures and calligraphic brush strokes.
