Artist Statement:
Using narrative as a counterpoint to imagery, my art explores life’s complexities and offers insight into the human condition, while primarily speaking through the experiences of women. As I seek to understand myself and my role in this world, I look for parallels between my life and the lives of other people. I often gain inspiration for my paintings from poetry, music lyrics, and literature, particularly stories from the Bible. Some paintings share my personal history and private reveries, other works are general musings about love and relationships, and are often allegorical rather than literal. Additionally, I usually model for the majority of the figural work as a way to connect with the character I’m seeking to identify with.
I often use bird imagery to symbolize freedom and femininity, two recurring themes in my work. I have always been interested in the personal stories of people who have felt trapped, stifled, imprisoned, gripped with fear, caged, and unable to live their lives the way they want –– then to hear how those people found freedom.
The use of text is another recurring element in my work. Sometimes the words bring clarity to the painting, and sometimes it adds to...
