Artist Statement:
The viewer of a painting, drawing or print is an active participant in a conversation between the artist's imagery and his/her own experiences and desires. In presenting the viewer with images, an artist can create either an adverse or positive reaction, depending upon the formal and cognitive qualities of what is placed on the canvas, and upon his (the artist's) understanding of the range of social and societal experience the viewer brings into the equation.
My emphasis has long been on the use of color and the simplification of form to set up an intuitive conversation, where color, shape and spatial inter-relationships work together to elicit an emotional and psychological response. Beginning with extremely simplified landscape imagery, where space and light are defined by strong color relationships and forms by broad areas and stripes of vibrant color, in the late 1960's and early 1970's I carried this approach into both painted canvases and single-plate color etchings and milling-machine engravings.
My recent work is on a more accessible scale than former large shaped canvas assemblages (6' X 12'). Beginning with similar imagery with variations to suit the expressive intent, they rely on coloristic ...
