Artist Statement for Leyla Murr

MAKING ART SPONTANEOUSLY
Croatian born artist living in Yorkshire for the last 20 years. Her art reflects her lively and inquisitive nature where colours are the main medium of expression through which she evokes the richness of a life long absorbtion of two cultures. She has been living in the UK for 30 years and is still very much attached to her homeland of Croatia where she travels often and takes inspiration from.
In her work Leyla negotiates relationship between her inner landscape with that of her experiences past and present. Her colourful compositions can be viewed as visual treats to cheer up a dreary wall or equally, they can attract contemplation on a deeper emotional level. In both instances Leyla's work surprises the visual senses with the directness and immediacy of its colourful impact.
Her paintings emerge out of a discourse between art history, the psyche and contemporary culture seeking an image that is layered, multifaceted and at times contradictory.
She paints on canvas using oils or acrylics. Most of the time she just begins choosing a colour, any colour and the process begins...
"I enjoy the creative process of subconscious "taming of colours" into a harmonious composition unifying the delicious unpredictability of the opposites"
