Artist Reviews:
Lia Chechelashvili's work is
an exercise in means and
effect. As she says, "minimum
means and maximum expression"
is her goal. Her work plays
with the formal character of
continuous white line on a
dark background. The sinuous
drawings wrap around the
picture transforming line into
figuration, denoted dimension,

Artist Statement for Lia Chechelashvili

Artistic education : self-taught

My earlier paintings: “Color symphonies” (oil on canvas)
“Still life” and “Autumn still life” (1988) are examples of my earlier work. My aim was to create color symphony, without any philosophical load, only vibrant strokes, interaction of colors and objects sometimes reflected in each other.

White lines on dark background (gouache on cardboard):
“Party” (1990) and “Cube” (1993) are examples of the body of work which I began in 1989.
These are mostly minimalist figurative compositions with white lines on dark background. Human figures, their interaction, linear transformations of the objects, rhythmic harmony of construction – these are the main features of my work.
Since then linear style has become dominating in my activity, although during all this time I have also been creating color figurative compositions with substantive philosophical and psychological content.

Digital (digitally embellished pencil drawings):
Recently I began experimenting with digital effects. So, I scan my drawings and then use different computer manipulations. I find this process very absorbing and interesting. The examples of this body of work are “Abstract dance” (2006), “Linear Universe” (2006),
“Lovers” (2007).
