Artist Statement for Liana Grammenos

Through self-reflection, intuition, and much research I have come to incorporate Metaphysics, Alchemy, Eastern/African and Tribal Cultures, Contemporary Psychology, and Kabbalah into my paintings in order to derive specific imagery such as exotic moth wing patterns, archetypes & archaic symbol(evil eye, mandala, triangle etc.), color and camouflage in order to draw from my own subconscious and importantly the viewer’s as well. The paintings are meant to create and reveal a separate reality from the visual world. The work is meant to suggest to the viewer the space or place between the conscious, subconscious, and external world and the intangible energy that it creates. I incorporate symbols as a medium for this. Everything in our reality is created by patterns and symbols that can give meaning to the intangible. They can be both a suggestion and a connection to our collective unconscious. This opens a gate for the viewer and myself. Using color as symbol to influence overall tone and mood, camouflage to slow the viewing process, or shape, pattern and symbolism taken loosely or directly from specific sources themselves, one automatically creates a “space” between mind and matter. This effect is exactly what is meant to be defined or suggested with the work. The “space” or a moment of transitory reality, and the energy in which that median creates.
Contextually I also draw from movements such as the contemporary Pop Surrealist and Neosurrealist movements, Psychedelic Art, and the Abstract Expressionists (for their incorporation of the philosophies of Carl Jung as well as the philosophies of color-field painting). Contemporary artists who influence me include Yoshitomo Nara, Takashi Murakami, Anri Sala (due to his documentary “Dammi i Colori” filmed in Tirana, Albania commenting on the impactful influence of color as symbol effecting the human psyche), Peter Doig (due to his incorporation of dream-like imagery in his paintings that contain a universal familiarity that taps into our collective sense of memory), Bernard Frieze, Chris Ofili, Fiona Rae, Paul Henry Ramirez and Fred Tomaselli. Other artists that I'm strongly influenced by include, Wassily Kandinsky, Gustav Klimt, Joan Miro, and Mark Rothko.
