Artist Statement for Linda Paul

Artists Statement
When asked ‘What is your favorite painting’, artist Linda Paul responds, ‘the next one I am going to paint!”

Linda Paul is the only artist in North America to combine egg tempera painting & bas-relief sculpture. Her latest work combines European landscapes & sculpted cuisine on plaster. She is a self taught painter and sculptor

Personal Standard:
In a society where everything seems so temporary, it is this artists personal standard to create works of art that will last for hundreds of years. She has combined the strict methodology of Renaissance artist Cennino, with her own inventive techniques which breaks many of the rigid rules of egg tempera painting. Her paintings derive from places of serene peace as well as places of intense power & strength and strive to express the relationship of man to nature.

Quality is Key:
In creating a work of art intended for longevity, artist Linda Paul uses only handmade and custom materials. A quality egg tempera painting starts with days of preparation for a single work. She begins with 1/4" maple boards that have been "cradled" with 3/4" supports. Then 10 layers of hand-made gesso are painted on both the front & the back of the board, then sanded to perfection before one drop of some thirty layers of pure egg tempera paint begins.

Natural Pigments:
The artist formulates & makes her own paint from fascinating natural pigments such as crushed malachite, slate, root of rose madder, and natural earth pigments hand-picked from quarries in France and Italy. She has recently discovered and is using several new minerals from the Rocky Mountains which have not been previously used in painting. Linda Paul has received a grant from the Puffin Foundation to pursue her research into new American minerals.

Sculpted Bas-Relief:
Works in the bas-relief series combine egg tempera painting with bas-relief sculpture. The works are incredibly textural and engage the viewer in a tactile as well as a visual experience. Her secret plaster recipe is applied to a cradled board, then each element is individually sculpted in relief of up to ½”. When the sculpting is finished, the egg tempera painting begins.

Why Egg Tempera?
This artist is captivated not only by the purity and naturalness of this medium, but by the science of it. Each pigment has its own set of properties and capabilities that must be explored. How better to express visions of the earth with anything
