Artist Statement for Momoko Sudo

MOMOKO: A Japanese-born self taught visual artist who is inspired to create an expression of contentment through her art. Momoko currently lives and works in Miami, Florida, USA.
LINESCAPING is a series of art works, created by lines. It features a minimalist abstraction with a distinctive style. The concept of using lines “allows the works to be interpreted by the viewer; one can see sand, water, figures or natural and organic elements that seemingly rise out of the paintings” (Cristina Figueredo, Lincoln Road Magazine, March 2006).
Not only interesting as fine art, the LINESCAPES also work well in interior design, giving a soothing and calm feeling. On the other hand, they can be dynamic, due to the optical effects the lines produce. “It moves.” is one of the common comments of viewers. I see an expression of contentment in my art, and believe our minds are a part of nature, intrinsic to perfect beauty.
TECHNIQUE: Painting lines with acrylic paint is a well-controlled version of drip painting, and it requires a certain mastery. The tool requires a constant tuning in order to produce the smooth and even lines. Not only the tool, but also the surface of the canvas requires treatments prior to making lines. Once all the preparations are made, however, the line-making is not as time-consuming as one might think.
The largest painting I have ever produced is 15 feet by 6 feet. I have achieved the control in dimensions, color, and thickness of lines, enabling me to be flexible and match the interior circumstances and needs.
