Artist Statement:
I am interested in blending traditional and contemporary techniques and materials and appreciate the challenge of rendering form and depicting the human figure especially. The tools and skills I’ve attained and developed are used to their full advantage. I try to assemble images that are at once both tender and strained, always searching for visual combinations that evoke more than just what is immediately depicted, with the intention other doorways into the meaning of the work are present. Once images are composed, the actual execution of the work becomes a way of further exploring the ideas and the overall tone I want to express.
I draw mainly from memory and personal narratives for subject matter, and try to show only that which is necessary, cropping the imagery closely to create tension within the composition. My pieces often turn into diptychs coming from a need to add more information – to compliment or oppose its counterpart. A goal of mine is to set up imagery in such a way as to have it be almost too obvious at first glance - allowing other layers of meaning to surface, in turn transcending initial impressions.
