Artist Statement:
I am a self-taught artist, therefore inquisitive instinct and creative persistence are undeniably the driving forces in my art-making process. I strive to capture an essence of spirit and reveal a sense of the sacred within creation, whether via photography, digital collages, or mixed-media painting and collage.
Currently I am pursuing a Masters in Education, specializing in Art Education, at the University of Victoria, BC, Canada. My final exhibition & thesis will explore the unification of traditional art-making processes and the digital realm of art production. As a teacher, the fusing of traditional & photographic art with digital technology serve as concrete examples to teach and compare/contrast the elements of colour, shape, line, form, tone and texture, and principles of balance, emphasis, harmony, unity, and opposition.
Curiousity, determination, experimentation, observation, deduction, and perseverance form the foundation of my art-making process. I began my career dedicated to artistically photographing the natural world, fascinating people and architecture, especially sacred sites, of my travels. Since 1999, I began fusing these images into new forms within the digital realm, utilizing Photoshop, as well as traditional painting and collage techniques.
I welcome commissions, and enjoy working collaboratively to create original works ...

Reviews for Lisa Maxine Kjernisted:

Re: Sacred Serenity
“Sacred Serenity consisted of a number of photographs, grouped according to a variety of thematic impressions. To embody values and ideals in visual work is an intense objective. Lisa’s photographs attempt to do this in unique and dynamic ways. Composition is highly refined, having a Zen-like appreciation for silent space and the dimension of emptiness. A great number of the works have a strong central subject focus which unites viewer and image instantly. In the work, natural objects (flowers etc.) and people trade places to emphasize the variety of transformative life on the planet. Throughout the work, her sense of calm balance prevails. The surrounding shouji isolates the bustle of the world and is successful in providing that peaceful “room within a room” concept. The images are powerful and deserve a fixed home in a medium such as book, video, film or multimedia.”

Re: Spectrums
“Lisa is to be commended for the efforts she made in undergoing her explorations. She had the opportunity to explore a variety of different software as well as try her photographic work in a new medium. Her finished work was exciting and presented a panorama of potential possibilities for later development. Lisa’s second production consisted of a series of nine framed photographs. As with all her work, these photographs reveal an eye with a tendency for the infinite with the particular. Good balance, harmony and strength of theme characterize these works. Lisa worked hard in her preparation for the exhibition. Her overall creative efforts, participation and great exhibition entry were excellent.”
