Artist Statement for Lisa Perkins

Artist Statement

As a fine artist and an art educator, I find myself experimenting with multiple ways of making art in order to broaden my experience and understanding of different processes. I try everything from pottery to digital photography, but find myself concentrating on three major areas: oil painted illustrations, monoprinting, and photography.

Having graduated with a concentration in illustration, I have built up a portfolio of illustrations and an understanding of the business. I’ve concentrated on creating paintings that illustrate political, social, or cultural themes. Illustration has become my most effective way of expressing my opinions and beliefs on current topics. Throughout my experience with illustration, I’ve come to notice a certain style I work into my paintings; flat, smooth color dominates, with fine line work in select areas to lend details or break up a large area of color. Recently I’ve continued this technique and widened my scope of illustrations to include portraiture. In select areas of the works, I’ve also incorporated use of printmaking, usually monoprinting in particular.

Monoprinting has been a technique I’ve used in my personal works; each series I create involves a process of layering transparent and semi-opaque images, which creates a surreal depth and perspective. The painterly techniques applied through the ink with brushes and brayers add light and assist in creating depth. Both the images and the backgrounds are of similar colors, creating a monochromatic piece that is often seen as hazy, foggy, deep, or transparent. From the snow-capped mountains in the Alps to the dry, windy dust of the Sahara Desert, these monoprints represent the nostalgia and mood I get when recalling upon my experiences in a foreign land. The images within the prints are chosen from my own photographs of places I have visited.

Not all of my photographs become prints, however. More often than not I use photography as a means of capturing something in its pure form. Rather than make a comment about a subject as in illustration, or recreate a mood on paper as in monoprinting, I photograph a scene, person, or object in the same manner I would record something in a journal. The way light moves around the edge of a shade and follows the windowsill, wall, baseboard, and ceiling is a clear and decisive moment in time often overlooked. Such moments or details not usually noticed are the subjects of my photographs.

Although these three areas of work are very different in technique and meaning, they represent aspects of life important to me. As I continue to practice these methods of working while incorporating other media, surely my focus will shift and waver. My work will constantly be in motion as new types of methods and materials will be included in my collection.
