Award winning Texas artist, Liz London, presents and donates her collage painting “New Growth” to cast and crew of the HBO television series “The Wire".
June 9th, 2007 “The Wire” producers, cast and crew will host a star studded, Hollywood-style event called “Night at the Wire” on the HBO sound stage with all proceeds benefiting the Ella Thompson Fund.
The fund raiser honors the memory of Ella Thompson, whose twelve-year-old daughter was raped and murdered in an alley near her west Baltimore home in 1988. Instead of retreating from her neighborhood, Thompson became involved with the community and was instrumental in converting a dilapidated recreation center into an after school refuge where inner-city children could escape the drug and violence infested street life. After working close to ten years making a difference with her work, tragically Ella passed away from a heart attack at the age of 47.
To sustain the spirit, benevolence and hard work of Thompson, David Simon, creator of the hit HBO series “The Wire” and the Baltimore Parks and People Foundation established a fund in her memory.
The fundamental mission of KidsGrow is to help those children living in blighted areas become future natural resource leaders through educational groups rejuvenating their own communities through stream clean-ups, vacant lot restorations, tree plantings, community gardening projects and community art projects.
KidsGrow teaches urban elementary and middle school youth in Baltimore City to appreciate their natural environment and to become stewards of their community. The goal for each student is to discover that his or her neighborhood is interesting and important – worth studying, protecting, improving and sharing with others. KidsGrow aspires to generate resiliency in students by helping them discover and develop skills and allowing them to bring their energy and voice to service projects they identify and plan.
