Primarily, my profession and experience lie in the field education, althought art, has been an important part of my life. As with most children, I enjoyed coloring and drawing. Though the years, I became more than interested in all forms of art, I began to study art. The greater the exposure the more my real passion was revealed. Late in life, TRUE...I'm a late bloomer.
About 15 years ago, I discovered the beauty and uniqueness of the medium watercolor. I began to study and experiment with waterbased paint. I spent many years, antiquing, painting, staining and refurbishing old furntiure developing a feel for the wood.
Quite recently I began designing and creating Southwestern/Texana jewelry. The various mediums worked their magic on me. My teaching Advanced Placement European History,(incorporates study of the major art periods and artists) andhas transported me. The culmination of my past art experiences and experiments has all evolved into my art process.
Hand-built wood frames/panels from wood either discounted from Home Depot or earmarked as trash. A base coat of acrylic paint is applied to back and front. Secondly, scratching of image with pencil or marker. Form for depth I hand-cut paper to be applied strategically over images. Next, the actual painting with acrylics and detailed with inks. Lastly, a polyureuthane coat is applied for that "oil" look and as protectective sealant.
Some pieces are very large, some not so. The natural grain, imperfections, marks, lines, knots and size most often dictate the direction for the piece.
